I enjoyed this book and I read it pretty quickly, but I'm giving it 3 stars because I don't think I would recommend it. I wasn't particularly drawn to any of the characters and don't think I'll be reading another Lehane book. I think the movie told the story just as well as the book did and the acting was so incredible that this is one where I could have skipped the book.

The story was wonderfully written. The characters came to life as the story of tragedy unfolded. I felt myself identifying and even idolizing the three main characters. While I was spoiled by the movie, and knew some of the parts coming up, I still fought against the knowledge and begged for things to be different. Each character struggled with a major aspect of themselves, having to either overcome who they feared they were or accept the demons inside. I would give it 4.5 if I could, the only downfall of the book was how it dragged a bit in the beginning.

Saw the movie first so it’s hard to say because I kept picturing Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon and Sean Penn. but I think it was a great story and of course got much more into the characters than the movie.

Good book, very well written. Heavy topics though.
