I listened to the audio book and the ensemble cast was amazing! The characters are great parodies of themselves and the book is a parody of the 1992 US American presidential election. Tracy Flick wants to be class president and will probably win except for the last minute entry of siblings, Paul and Tammy Warren. Paul is encouraged to run for office by social studies teacher Mr M who is going through an existential crisis. And Tammy enters the race because she can. Tracy Flick had been having an affair with another teacher at the school, which Mr M knew about. I wondered whether he encouraged Paul to enter because of this. The campaign, the speeches by the candidates and their 'trash talk' of each other was very funny. I'm looking forward to reading 'Tracy Flick Can't Win'. This quote says it all about the biting humour of the book: “Maybe that's what we look for in the people we love, the spark of unhappiness we think we know how to extinguish.”

There aren't many writers who do suburbia like Tom Perrotta does.
Unlike me, there are reviewers who will complain that there is not enough plot or twists, etc. for their liking. Blame the instant gratification mindset.
But for those like me, novels that rely on character development and their interactions with each other are delicious brain candy. Especially how Perrotta does it.
I have only read three novels of his so far, and each one of them follows similar themes: life in suburbia, simple on the surface, but as the layers peel back there are terrific characters revealed (whether you like them or not), and we experience their friendships, relationships, and inevitably their infidelities. Oh yes, underlining his stories is sex, the exploration and questioning and submission to urges is prescient in all of his stories and it's pretty much impossible to put the pages down.
I picked up Election only because I was excited to see that he had a new novel out (Tracy Flick Can't Win), and that this was a sequel to that. So.
Election follows a high school election for student president (hello, high school students for fine character fodder). While Election follows the themes typical of his other novels, I have to say that I wasn't fond of the ending. But, it was a short novel, only 200 pages, and I absolutely burned through it.
So far Election is my least favourite of his, but four stars definitely deserved for completely holding my attention hostage for a couple of days.
