Dark humor and quirky

Audiobook.

So I really would give this book 4 1/2 stars. Admittedly, I saw the movie way before I even knew the story was a book. I'm not quite sure whether or not I liked the book more than the movie. They were both really great. The book definitely offered more character back story and development while the movie delivered a more impactful playout of the drama. Though I will applaud the movie's adherence to the rotating narration that drives the plot of the book. Overall, I couldn't put the book down and finished it in less than a day which I believe is the tell tale sign of great book.

Election: Or, Pick Flick, or Don't

A high school student council election is the premise of this novel but there is so much more to it. It's not just about the votes, but about human nature, about sadness, loneliness, lost dreams, the ordinary, and more. There's so much to be said about everything that can be found in the ordinary and what people project onto others.

The characters: Mr. McAllister, Tracy Flick, Paul Warren, and his sister, Tammy, are all wonderfully written, with complex thoughts and actions and dreams. It was fun reading about their thoughts and seeing how they acted with others. Also, the novel is damn funny. Who wins the election? You'll have to read to find out.

A very quick and engrossing read with a cast of flawed characters. Aside from the Warren siblings, none of the characters are redeemable. All of the male teachers are disgusting and unredeemable, their internal and external dialogues highlighting the cultural phenomena of adult men sexualizing  young women. The rest of the HS ensemble feel like real teenagers, and Perrotta really paints them in all their worst moments. The only character I really rooted for was Tammy, but I sometimes rallied Tracy since you could tell so much of her behavior stemmed from social rejection.
