It’s probably more like 3.5 stars. It’s a light hearted fun frolic that you can’t take too seriously. I mean, within the space of a week Zoe, a several hundred year old ex-alchemist, has: given up her Airstream trailer lifestyle, moved in to an ancient house that is quite literally falling apart, discovered a not-always-stone-may-actually-be-alive gargoyle stowing away in one of her crates, fallen for the local police detective, found a dead body on her doorstep, befriended a teenager who needs some guidance, made countless breakfast smoothies, become a murder suspect and an actual housebreaker, and returned to her alchemy teachings. And it would seem, although you’d think otherwise, that finding a stone gargoyle come alive, and have it cook gourmet vegan meals almost constantly, is the least peculiar thing to Zoe .... It was an easy fun read, just remember your pinch of salt!

This book started off interesting and then lagged a little in the middle, but the ending was great! I can't wait to read the 2nd one.. It was worth it. I want my own personal gargoyle chef!

Quite fun, engaging, sweet. I needed this break from reality. I found the author notes in the back a great idea, especially the recipes, since cooking is mentioned so frequently. Clever enough, but didn't scare the * out of me as some do
This was slightly silly, but fun to read nonetheless. I found a few places where the French didn't make sense, but that didn't really affect the story.
I’m surprised at the number of negative reviews, but I expect - as with any book - it’s all about expectations. If you expect thriller, hard hitting action adventure, angst or lust driven romance - this is not it. It’s a cozy mystery style, light, gentle pacing, likable characters.
An enjoyable read, I’ll check out more from this author.

Really enjoyed the bits about vegan cooking, nexttime I'm at the library I'll have to look up some more info on it.
