Listening to this was great...the ensemble cast was amazing! The story itself however was challenging. Alex is 11 years old ("though 13 in responsibility years") and is passionate about rockets. He spends a lot of time on rocket forums and even connects with people who are heading to a rocket launch contest. He buys his train fare, gets he and his dog on board and then through one seemingly random connection after another manages to get to the launch site. Adults help him throughout and wonder how his parents have let him travel alone this far. The story continues this way with one quest/adventure after another with more and more adults stepping in to help Alex. The premise is interesting and Alex is a great kid but the real story is Alex's insanely dysfunctional family and to wait until the end of the book to deal with such heavy issues was frustrating. I wonder if students will feel less annoyed than adults?
Somewhat hard to recommend but it definitely was a good listen. Grades 6 and up.

A perfectly sideways look at the impact on children of a parent's mental illness. Alex's voice and love for Carl Sagan (the person and the dog), space, and rockets--and his family--sparkle like a gajillion stars.
Dirljivo. Savršeno. Emotivno. Jedinstveno. Opčinjavajuće. Nevino. Iskreno. Zabavno. Lepo.

Suka deh pokoknya.
Cukup unik.

My youngest son won't pick up a book unless it's assigned. Yup, I call myself "The Reading Countess," yet I have a reluctant reader. He doesn't see himself as a lover of books (yet), and doesn't realize that the more words he lets his eyes gobble the better off he will be in all aspects of his life. His assigned reading this summer is FAREWELL TO MANZANAR, but I have struck a deal with him that he needs to read other books besides that lone text this summer. Enter SEE YOU IN THE COSMOS.
Reminiscent of COUNTING BY SEVENS (love that book...) Jack Cheng's debut novel is an unflinching look at Alex's mixed-up world. You see, in Alex's world, you are in charge of not only your eleven year-old self, you also must look after your mother and your gastro-intestinally-challenged dog. In this world, you can figure out how to build a rocket, transport said rocket and flatulantly-prone dog on Amtrak to faraway NM, meet a wide range of people along the way to your side stops in LA and Vegas, and then make it home again with your half-sister only to discover that your mom is more complicated than you thought. You'll notice I left out his brother, whom I wanted to throttle most of the time; however, he did redeem himself at the end when he showed Alex the true meaning of love (read the book and you'll see what I mean).
SEE YOU IN THE COSMOS' Alex has the pitch-perfect voice for an exceptionally bright, if not slightly-on-the-spectrum kiddo. Jack Cheng masterfully wrote Alex's narration and expertly shows how unreliable his character is. SEE YOU IN THE COSMOS is one of the few books I'd love to reread, and it is one of the summer reads I am hoping my youngest son will love as much as I did.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

This book had me laughing out loud, and then crying, within a span of a few pages. Wonderfully quirky and moving. Highly recommend it. Looking forward to seeing what Jack Cheng does next.
Beautiful emotional rollercoaster. Sure, the story might be slightly naïve but great literature is not always about that. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and I didn't want it to end. One of my all time favourites.
An interesting story of a boy who loves space and is searching for truth. Elements of mental health topics incorporated.

Audiobook
Told in audio recordings (which is part of the reason it translates so well to audiobook), this book is about Alex, a boy who is trying to build a rocket and send an Ipod out to space. There are a few heavy issues surrounding Alex's family that a younger reader likely would not completely understand. But it is presented in an approachable manner that would make for a good platform to discuss mental health.
