This was a touching story of a really great 11-year-old living life to its fullest in the midst of really difficult circumstances. The format of him making recordings for aliens who might discover his iPod was engaging and creative; however, so much was clear to the reader, while he remained unaware, that I'm left not really feeling like this was a children's book.
This was an interesting little book. The style was really easy to read and I enjoyed what I read but it's a middle grade book and I think some of the themes in this weren't exactly suitable for children.
All Alex wants to do is send his iPod into space so that aliens can learn about life on Earth. He goes to a space festival over a weekend with his dog but suddenly things start to change which stops him from returning home and suddenly he's on an adventure that he never expected to be going on.

It was okay. I don’t know what exactly I got from this. But I mostly only skimmed over the pages. I loved Alex and how candid he is. Makes me long for my childhood. It was a cute real fiction story. Realistic fiction is not really my genre but if the writing and story is really good, it works. This wasn’t one of those books.
Anybody who reads this sweet middle reader will fall in love with the voice of eleven year old Alex. He's both naive about how the world works and wise beyond his years. Alex has been preparing for his quest - to launch his rocket containing his golden ipod into outer space at a rocket festival in New Mexico. The story is told as he records his life on the ipod presuming that space aliens or other intelligent life forms will someday listen to his words. Alex meets, and learns from, all kinds of unique and helpful people on his quest.
"I don’t get it, what’s the difference between real love and not-real love? How do you know that time was real? How can you tell?"
ALEX IS SO PURE!!

I lovely story about an 11-year-old boy called Alex from Colorado who is obsessed with everything to do with space and rockets. The story is told with him is the narrator through a series of recordings that he makes into his iPod which he plans on sending up to space for extraterrestrials to learn about earth one day. His dog is his best friend, he has an older brother, who no longer lives in Colorado, his father has died, and his mother isn’t very present. It’s a story about how a little boy discovers the world around him, the complex dynamics of his broken family, and how he navigates the big world around him.
It’s incredibly sweet, and it is absolutely written in the tone and the language and the style of an 11-year-old boy. It’s moving and funny in equal measure, and beautifully tells you the darker sides of this family’s story, through the innocent and naive eyes of an 11-year-old. However, do not be fooled, Alex is a very smart boy.
