Alex Petroski wants to send a rocket into space with a recording he is making on an ipod, much like his idol Carl Sagan did with a record. He is hoping that intelligent life will find the recording and learn about Earth. When Alex leaves on his own to go to a rocket launch event a series of events are started that lead to Alex finding new friends and family and learning that maybe he can rely on others instead of just himself.
Good for ages 10 and up. Some tough issues are brought up such as abuse, mental illness in a parent, and neglect of a child, but they are narrated by Alex and will either go over the head of a younger reader or be easily handled as Alex himself tends to not fully understand many of the situations or he glosses over them.

wholesome and cute with a coming of age plot that focuses on found family
ARC. This was so very, very sweet and such an usual format. At first, I worried that the "recording" format would get to be forced feeling and gimmicky but it fit so well with Alex's voice and the flow of things that I fell in love with it. Alex is 100% charming and so recognizable. Clearly a ND child and more than likely autistic but it's just a fact and no one ever labels or obsesses over his differences. Just like the reader, those around him are charmed and come to accept him as he is. At turns heartbreaking and laugh-out-loud, this book was lovely.
This was such a fun read, I enjoyed it more than I expected.
I kinda get the same feeling while reading Wonder. Both are awesome!

I feel like Alex reads a little younger than 11, maybe more like 9 but overall it was a good story. I'm surprised how much I related to the story.
My one complaint was how often we basically got a running synopsis of the story, because this was such a quick read it felt unnecessary. I know that it was more to portray the characters age but that was why he felt younger to me.

I received a copy via Net Galley.

I thought that this was a really enjoyable read. This book follows Alex who travels to a rocket convention to launch a rocket that he has created. Alex travels to by himself to the convention as his mum is not well enough to take him and his brother is busy. He travels with his dog and whilst at the convention he meets Zed and Steve and they travel to Las Vegas together. Whilst in Las Vegas Alex discovers some secrets about his dad.
I thought that Alex was a brilliant character. He was young and naive but he was also taking on a lot considering his home life with his mother. We really get to see Alex develop in this book through his recordings that he creates to send into outer space. I also really like the side characters in this book and thought that they were really well developed as well.
The second half of the book becomes about Alex's mother and the fact that she has schizophrenia and hasn't been looking after Alex. Throughout the book the author gives hints that his mum is not well but we don't find out the real extent until later on. Alex seems to have been left to take care of his mother as he makes meals for her despite only being 11. I was surprised that Ronnie (his brother) had just left Alex with his mum. I know he had a job and was earning money to support them but he shouldn't have left Alex to deal with everything.
Overall I thought that this was an enjoyable read. It is aimed at younger readers but I am not sure how much they will appreciate the story especially the aspects surrounding Alex's mother. I would like to read more from the author in the future. This is his second book and I think he has a lot of potential and I am interested to see what he will bring out next.

A story of a boy with his dog and all the secrets of the cosmos in between. Brilliant!
Fastest book I’ve read all year 😂. It was a very quick read. I like the Alex train of thought writing the author used. I gave it 4 instead of 5 because I feel like the kid got too lucky, going out on his own and traveling with strangers. I feel like in today’s world he’d have a much harder time? So it was a bit of a stretch. But other than that, a great book.
