I adored this book. It's aimed at children, but it's written as if Alex is recording the events through his iPod and his voice was lovely and mature for an 11 year old boy. There were times where his innocence came through and that made the story even more endearing.

From the very first page I knew this wasn't the typical space book, it reminded me a little bit of Young Sheldon, but only because it's a about a young boy who loves science. The similarities end there- also, there's a dog. Any book that has a dog is a winner in my eyes.

It's not just about his love of space, it's also about his family. There's a twist later on (after Alex discovers something about his dad through an ancestry website) which I was really worried would turn out for the worst but it didn't and really added to Alex's journey as we follow his narration through different moments in this period of his life.

I also loved the pop culture references throughout the book, it definitely gave it a real-world feel.

It's a book to read and be enjoyed. It can be enjoyed by people of every age because rockets and space travel never age.

It's a truly beautiful story.

5/5 stars.

If you have the opportunity go with the audiobook version of this story, it is fantastic.

This book was absolutely charming and wonderful. The audio ended up being one of the best performances I've ever listened to. It had a young boy narrating the main character along with a cast for side characters. on top of that it had sound effects. And the boy who narrated the book was absolute perfection.

4.5

Read this book with my secondary school students and we loved it. The story has many layers and is a joy to read with other children as you can take turns reading lines as it's written like a script in many places. It's laugh out loud funny and sad at the same time.

Oh, wow.

Now there is a lot going on in this book. So much so that sometimes it just seems like one thing piled on another piled on another. But honestly, this was so sweet, I wanted to listen to Alex ramble about rockets for as long as he wanted, and I wanted things to be better for him.

Is some of it lost in that it's 'recordings'? Maybe. At the very least, it's a real, legitimate criticism. But this was super good anyway.

Super compelling and original main character. I almost gave up on it when they were in Las Vegas, but Terra made it so much better.

I want to have the attitude and confidence that this child does! My heart is filled with love for this character!
