Alex lives with his mom and dog Carl Sagan (named after his hero). His mom's not well (she has lots of what he calls quiet days) and his brother is an agent in LA, so most of the time he's on his own.
It's a long story, but he goes to the desert to launch a rocket as part of a competition and, from there, ends up in Vegas. And then LA. His life goes from fairly contained to much bigger, and with more friends.
This is a hard book to discuss. It's not like there are major plot twists (Sixth Sense style) but Alex deserves to tell the story his way.
I love Alex and his fondness for science and his fierce loyalty and the way he sees things. I bet you will, too.
Recommended.

Okay, this book was super charming and the audio edition is very well done. Definitely recommend!
such a sweet sweet sweet book! i'll keep thinking about alex and how is the greatest and how this book is like a warm hug for a long time
dug how each chapter was set up as an audio recording, the idea of this kid whose in absolute love with space and rockets and SETI, and makes his own golden record. his dog is named carl sagan. it’s cute. it started off cute. i liked watching alex’s journey progress and each side character we meet.
it’s a middle grade book. there were some parts i liked and some aspects i didn’t like writing wise and i kept reading to finish. i don’t know, I thought I’d enjoy this read more but that could just be me as the reader.
it’s a cute story though.

3 of 5 stars!
I dunno why but the story is kinda good enough for me and so so. I am not really entertained with this pieces. Somehow Alex too mature for his age and the problem solving about disappearance Carl Sagan is so so. I recommend this one if you love Astronomy and aerospace stuff since so many things related. The books is good enough but it is not memorable one for me.
When i saw this Hardcover edition with only IDR 119.000 i just directly brought into cashier and it makes me happy since i'm member and got more addition Discount 10%. It is so cheap! >_<

This read like an own-brand imitation of Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime[book:The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time|1618]. It centres around a young boy, Alex, who essentially sets out on a quest to get to a space convention (although this is quickly dispensed with to be replaced by his new quest to find his father. Sound familiar?) The problems arise, however, with the amount of belief a reader has to suspend in order to get behind him. Whereas in Curious Incident, the lengths Christopher goes to to fulfil his quest are believable, even courageous, the things we are asked to believe that Alex does (such as travel across half of the country, alone, and then with several adult 'good guy' strangers) just stretch the limits of credibility in my opinion.
The action moves along at a decent enough pace, but becomes confused at times, with sub-plots never really grabbing the attention fully, leaving a sense of impatience and wanting to get on with the 'real' plot. Alex's narrative device is a golden iPod onto which he records virtually everything that is happening, which leads to some fairly awkward sections of dialogue to plow through. The use of an external recording method has striking similarities with how Christopher tells his story in [book:The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time|1618].
Ultimately, it wasn't a terrible book. But I think if the author had been a little more inventive and presented a story which was even a little more believable, he could have done a much better job.

I received an uncorrected proof copy via the publisher and NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
I’ll admit, it was the beautiful cover that attracted me t pick up this for review – just look how stunning it is!
This was a wonderfully heart warming (and at times heart wrenching) read. I lvoed the unusual format of this book; written in the format of recordings from Alex’s iPod meaning its told from the 11-year-old’s point of view.
It was a wonderful take on the story, meaning we saw his joy at the rocket convention and his love for his dog. Throughout the story there are things which seem totally fine to a child, but as an adult reading we can see there’s something else going on (I mean, an 11 year old definitely should be heading off on a long journey and meeting strangers on his own).
Overall I’m thrilled to have picked up this book. It reminded me of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time and The Universe Versus Alex Woods – I would highly recommend all 3!

4.5 stars for me, which counts as 5 stars.
This book hit me close like home. It is so beautiful and heart-wrenching and cute and funny and everything. Alex has been added to my personal favorite characters list.
This book, oh my God.
