Where do I even begin with this absolute masterpiece? Just… whoa. I’ve been a Kristin Hannah collector with probably about 6 of her books on my shelf that I intend to read but keep not making it to… now I’m kicking myself that I put them off for so long! If this book is any indication for the rest of her work, I better buckle up.
The Great Unknown takes place in the Alaska wilderness through all seasons and spanning several years, starting in 1974. It’s very much a “family in crisis” story that explores what can happen in the aftermath of a veteran returning home from war. The inability to keep a job, the drinking, temper… what a toll it can take on mental health and just how detrimental it can be for the family. What it takes to survive an Alaskan Winter in such a remote region complicates and compounds an already fragile mental state.
My heart absolutely broke for Leni, the FMC of this story. A teenager who deserves so much more from life than the hand she’s been dealt… what she endured and has to overcome absolutely broke me. While I was so angry with Cora, her mom, over and over through this book for the choices she kept making… I was also struck by the knowledge that her husband wasn’t the man she fell in love with after the war and how difficult and emotional THAT had to be for her… remembering who he used to be while coming to terms with who he is now.
This was a super heavy read, so make sure you’re in a mental state that can handle it before you start… but I wholeheartedly recommend.
⭐️ 5/5

I liked the book, was drawn into the way it painted the setting in such a way I could recreate it in my imagination. The end really pulls you in, you feel for the characters. The writing itself was quite simple, and I felt that the plot could have been more complex as well. I enjoyed this read, however.
