Storetelling: 4/5
Characters: 2/5
Plot: couldve been a 4/5, became a 1/5
I think i just love how Kristen Hannah writes. Because this plot really pissed me off. Like really? The first half was amazing. It felt like a rugged alaska and the family dynamic was tense and believable. Dad was abusive and paranoid, but not so out there that you dismiss him immediately. Mom was enabling and selfish, but also maternal and sturdy. They felt like a real couple. Lenny was okay, normal daughter, no strong feelings. Matthew... i *hated* matthews character. Mr. Perfect and his dad Mr. Perfect Sr. They felt unreal and captain save a hoe trope. Lenny fell in love with matthew and I'm like... for what? There was no chemistry or bonding. Just a huge time jump and the expectation for the reader to fill in how they fell in love.
Okay so I gotta believe this pregnant 18 yo is ready to stand by a vegetative human and raise their son alone in alaska? And then i thought Matthew was killed off and I was glad cause I had enough of him and was ready to hear more of the family history and story unfold. Nope. Kills off the dad. Bring Matthew BACK and hes basically ready to be a dad the instant he sees his son (who is like 10 the first time they meet) and he drives boats and is a gifted painter and basically just speaks slowly??? He was a whole ass vegetable i thought? He was going to have severe brain damage?? He wasnt going to remember Lenny??? Nope. Lenny and him marry and raise their kids in alaska and blah blah blah. Im pissed.
I wanted a story about Cora and Ernt and Lenny. I did not want a teenage love story. In fact my most hated trope is the "teenager who is dying falls in love and defies all odds" and thats basically what this book gave me. That ending cause suck a nut cause wtf was that.
