It was a slow start. I didn’t really like the book until about halfway through. Then suddenly I was completely enthralled. I stayed up reading for hours hoping I would finish it before it was due back to the library. I finished it in a day after I was able to check it out again. I love this book.

Fantastic book.  The challenges that Leni and her mother faced with her deranged father was very suspenseful, but there was also hope that he would get better, or they would be able to leave him.  Matthew was the kindest more loving person and his love for Leni and her's for him was the most hopeful part of this story.

I haven’t devoured a book like this in ages. My first Kristin Hannah book, but certainly not my last. Hannah depicts the bush of Alaska as a world of mystery, violence, and discovery. I was captivated, devastated, and baffled by this book. What an incredible story.

My heart was tense and I already kind of know what’s coming at the beginning, I smelt and sensed DV because I’m a survivor. It’s hard to leave and it’s hard to get away especially when children is in consideration. But she had such amazing support system, something I could never have dreamed of.
I’m glad that I’m done with this book. It definitely helped me see things clearer with dreaming to move north (not Alaska north).
Cora’s explanation for “love” is too shallow honestly. For someone who’s tried to defend the abuser, “love” is never good enough reason to convince others or herself. Otherwise pretty believable.
And also, she blamed a lot of things on PTSD which… I think abusers are abusive not because of the nightmares but because that’s who they are. That’s just a bad excuse.
The police person at the end was kind of unnecessarily harsh.

I’m so glad that they got out eventually by killing him, that’s an easy way out. My question is, how to continue with the rest of my life as a battered wife, or a survivor
