I soon realized the way the plot was going to unfuld but still the story kept me engaged. I especially enjoyed the feline point of view of the book. Although mostly written from the cat's perspective, the story mainly explore the relationship between cat and human. Occasionally the POV switches which shed a valuable light on the back stories of the characters.

A really sweet book about a man and his cat. The audiobook voice threw me off at first because I wasn't expecting the cat's POV to be a very proper British man... But it eventually grew on me. I loved how the book explored just how important and special an animal-human bond can be. But have tissues ready because it is definitely a tear-jerker.

This absolutely nailed the narration style and voice of a cat. It was so spot on that whenever we were in Nana's perspective, the effect was humorous, sardonic, and bluntly insightful. Each of the people that we visit throughout the book has interesting stories, but I wasn't overly attached to any of them. They were definitely well done and enjoyable as well as good at ultimately portraying their intended message. I definitely got teary-eyed at few points, but what I think about when I think of this book is Nana's perspective and how that was written. Although we never directly got the perspective of Satoru, but through each of the different perspectives, we get a very good view of this willfully optimistic friend, even through all the tragedies in his life. I enjoyed this, and it definitely had an impact on me, but not so much that I am obsessed with it.

Like many others when reading this book, Arikawa managed to connect me to the characters so deeply that I laughed and then cried as the story progressed. As an animal lover who recently lost my furry best friend, this story hit me hard and sprouted joy deep within me at the thought of again seeing my little man one day.

This story follows Satoru and Nana and their lives together. Satoru is a young Japanese man who brings joy to those around him, but has experienced many troubles in his own life and managed to maintain his positivity despite this. Nana, on the other hand, is a sarcastic cat who, like all other cats, believes himself to be superior to all other beings in both knowledge and standing. Well, except for Satoru whom his love for clearly unfolds throughout this tale.

Satoru is trying to find a new home for Nana due to a change in his personal circumstances. We see him visit old friends, learn of his history with those friends, and enjoy Nana performing his many antics to remain by Satorus side.

The story is beautifully told in most parts, drawing such a compelling picture that I could almost hear the cicadas of summer, smell salt as my stomach rolled on the ferry, feel the chill of the fresh fallen snow in Hokkaido, taste the sake boiled chicken and see Mount Fuji rising in the distance.

Despite this, perhaps only a problem with audiobook, I struggled to keep track of the plot and purpose in some places. I don’t have an issue with “no plot just vibes”, but this story definitely has a plot and I just felt that I lost it in several places.

Overall, a lyrically told tale of friendship, family, and the unconditional love between a young man and his cat.
