I listened to this on audio. I had high hopes for this one because I was OBSESSED with her previous book, Dead Silence. It took about 66% of the book for something to really happen. I still have no clue what was the big reveal. I have to acknowledge that S.A. Barnes knows how to write creepy ass scenes. Even though I was not obsessed with the book, her descriptions had me checking dark places and checking my arms to see if anything was on them. Even though I was not obsessed with this one, I will continue to pick up whatever she writes. Oh! Also, there was absolutely NO REASON to have any romance in this book. It did not go with the book. It changed the scene. I normally am a romance girlie but this time, I wanted no romance.

"But I think if you let the past haunt you, if you can't accept it, it's that much harder to make better choices in the future."

Ghost Station by S.A. Barnes is my first read by them, and while I don't know what I was truly expecting, only knowing that it was a space exploration with a death, I felt like it was way more naturally science fiction than horror.

I did really enjoy Barne's writing style, but I think the main problem I had with Ghost Station was the pacing. The summary makes the main twist out to be near the beginning of the book, when it doesn't happen until at least halfway through. I feel like it had more of a focus on the team, and while the team is an important part, until around 60% in, the true danger wasn't a huge part of it yet.

I felt a certain disconnect with Ophelia, a psychologist who's sent to help with the team. To help escape her trauma, she comes along with the team to explore a planet, and is sucked right back in. There could've been a lot more understanding coming from both sides of her coming along, especially from Ophelia herself.

Ethan was probably my fav character. He just wants to help, and make the most out of a bad situation, but after the team's lies and deception, he feels frustrated and sad cause he blames himself for everything that's happened. He's just a huge teddy bear, be honest.

Overall, if you're a fan of sci-fi, horror, body horror, and Barnes, you will enjoy Ghost Station.

Her first novel was creepier with a better ending. I would've loved more show & less tell re: the MC's self-psychoanalysis. This was fine and I'll read her next novel, assuming we get one, but if it's this level then she'll no longer be a must-read.

This book solidified S. A. Barnes as an author I definitely want to keep tabs on. I really enjoyed their debut, Dead Silence, and Ghost Station provides a strong follow up. All the wonder and advanced tech of a sci-fi novel blended with the tension and anxiety of a good thriller. I enjoyed the characters and felt the plot moved along at a good pace. Ophelia is an especially interesting character and her twisted backstory adds a lot more depth to the overarching story. Barnes does a great job building so much paranoia into this book - I constantly found myself second guessing the things happening on the page, which played really well with the primary storyline. The body horror was top notch and it was difficult not to itch while reading!

Added bonus: some great conversations surrounding mental health and trauma. Very unexpected in this context, but ended up being a very well-executed surprise.

The only thing keeping this from being a solid five stars is that I did want a little more from the ending. It felt a bit rushed at the very end and I wasn't entirely settled afterwards. I'll be eager to see what other reviewers think about this.

4.5 stars! Top tier creepy things happening in space - highly recommend!

Special thanks to Tor and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for review.
