i’ve noticed a significant amount of hate and negative feedback regarding this book, but i chose to read it anyway. the story centers on tegan, who is eight months pregnant, alone, and yearns to leave her crumbling life behind. she sets out on a journey, intending to stay with her brother until she can figure out her next move. however, she is unaware that she is driving directly into a snowstorm. stranded in a blizzard in rural maine with a broken ankle, she is rescuer by a couple and brought to their cabin, only to soon realize she is in serious danger. from that point, she must fight to save herself and her unborn child.

“you know you’ve got someone really special when they are able to save you from ruining your own life.”

first of all, the premise and storyline are intriguing. however, the initial chapters are kinda boring. there’s nothing in the beginning that holds my interest, leading to frequent distractions while reading. it was also rather predictable, which made it less exciting. plus, the pacing was too slow, which is highly different from the usual freia mcfadden writing style. what i appreciate about the plot is that she avoided unrealiable characters and succeeded in clarifying the viewpoints of the characters for the readers. i also believe this is the first book by freida where i didn’t experience any frustration towards the main character. at times, i feel she tents to be overly dramatic and stupid. and as a pregnant woman, how could tegan overlook the weather before venturing into a snowstorm? certain elements in the story really don’t make sense.

overall, i gave it 2.5 stars. although the plot has improved as it unfolded, there are still unrealistic elements noticeable within the storyline. additionally, the twists are not as impactful as those in her previous works and it entirely lacks the suspense i’ve come to expect from her books.

Not her best book, this one ends up near the bottom for me. The beginning is your typical background story and character introduction. The middle takes part over the course of several days and is redundant with a smattering of different mundane daily happenings that makes it seem less like Groundhog’s Day. Then comes the twist that comes with every Frieda book. However, the twist in this one was underwhelming at best and seemed rushed, one minute  the story is building and the next it’s over.

There could’ve been much more detail to unraveling the mess the main character Tegan ends up in but it reads as bullet points from an outline drafted into elementary sentences. As a nurse myself the part after the twist is just so improbable given the security measures of locked hospital units.

Hank is insufferable and absolutely infuriated me but ever so slightly redeemed himself. Polly belongs locked up in a psychiatric hospital for a good long time.

This book was intriguing in the beginning, then sputtered out for the rest of it. No mind-blowing crazy Freida twists like I'm used to. It just kind of fizzled. There was definitely potential for it, but just didn't go anywhere. I waited forever and a day it seemed for my hold at the library.
The reader gets to see the situation mainly from both Tegan and Polly's perspectives. Tegan is a pregnant woman who crashes her car in the middle of the snowstorm and Polly's husband takes her to their house.

3.5 Stars 🌟

A crash, a snowstorm, and a couple offering “help.”

I love Freida’s writing - she keeps you turning those pages. The chapters are always short and end on some sort of wild thought or action that makes you want to jump into the next right away.

The crash isn’t as insanely good as the Housemaid series but you’ve got to give it up to Freida for writing books faster than I can decide my next read.

I even was rooting for Polly in some chapters! I enjoyed the ending of this.

Honestly perfect for getting you out of slumps or if you need an enjoyable thriller ❤️
