i do love obnoxious mcs, esp teens. maybe my rating it too harsh? it felt forgettable. nothing fancy. don't know how i feel abt the twist at the end. also the literal /everyone clapped/ scene definitely didnt help

"My Objective, once achieved, turned out to be something else entirely." And that's Mary Iris Malone's journey in a nutshell. Quirky and wise and utterly enjoyable. Well, except for the final 10 pages, which weren't quite as utterly. They were a little too "tie everything up neatly with a bow." But. The other 320 or so pages rocked. The author has drawn some criticism for his protagonist's use of "war paint." I found Mim's defenses against the craziness of the world to be authentic and certainly not a denigration of Native Americans. Mim takes you on a truly epic road trip.

Not even gonna review this one. It was intriguing, but it just wasn't my style. Still, I think someone else would like this, so it gets three stars.

“People say home is where the heart is, but I think maybe home is the heart.”
🦟
Mim Malone is not okay. She’s been taken from her home of Ohio to Mississippi with her dad and his new wife, leaving behind her mother who suddenly has stopped writing to Mim. After a big fight with her dad and stepmother, she decides to go to track down her mom. Boarding a Greyhound she fends off lecherous men, a sweet old lady, survives a bus crash and more quirky travelers along the way. As we follow Mim’s journey we also get to see flashbacks of what led her here.
🚍
I didn’t like Mim very much and yet I couldn’t stop reading this YA coming of age story. It was heartbreaking and weird and real and beautifully written. I could have stayed in this #novel for a long while.
CW: vomit (lots), sexual assault, paedophilia, homelessness, foster care, smoking, bus crash, blood, death, rape

It’s got its fair share of problematic language, political incorrectness, and generally cringey writing, but the lessons are there. They may not be anything new or groundbreaking, but they punch you in the gut all the same.
