This book happens when an author is under contract to write another book and has no idea what to write. It's a collection of past articles combined into a book. There's not even commentary to tie them all together.
The articles were great, but the book truly had little narrative structure, I would have liked at least a little commentary added to make it a true book.

WHY were they cheap and had him narrate the book? He wasn't a terrible narrator, but not great either.

As others have said this has an immaclute vibe. You can feel what the author wants you to feel and it's really well written. But I think a novel does not fit the authors style at all as the quick burst of stories that hook you seem to work more effectivly sepratly. I would love to read a zene or a newspaper full written by him as it would be a better medium to watch him flow.

Love this author, not as strong as his full blown books, but I have to admit some of the stories were enthralling and his writing style is exquisite. Also spoiler alert but I would have liked to share a meal and a beer with Anthony Bourdain in some little spot in some faraway country. Elite vibes guy
