Almost dnf’d several times. Have read one author MZ book and this one will definitely they be my last.

MMC did not have a strong enough redemption arc.

Writing style is not for me. So many words and phrases  get repeatedly used in a way that is tiresome and annoying.  The manuscript definitely needed another round of robust editing.

This is my second favourite MZ book.

While it took FOREVER to get into the story and I lowkey hate Sal and think Kulti has a few red flags (no friends? Why did he get fucking wasted that one time? Nothing to do all day every day after he finishes morning practice?), the development of their friendship and subsequent romance felt very natural. I was a bit surprised that the whole book took place over 4 months, it felt like at least double that.
Either way, I loved how clear it was that Kulti was head over heels in love with Sal while she was oblivious. It made me want to keep reading to get more cute moments between them!

I absolutely hate the nicknames MZ's male characters use for their women. Schnecke is no exception (though nothing tops Lukov's "Meatball", makes me gag every time).

Another annoying thing about MZ's writing is how much she uses the tactic of entering a scene after all the interesting stuff had happened, when characters are already reacting to it, while the reader enters it blindly, witnessing the reactions without know what they are about. MZ uses this incredibly often. That wouldn't be so bad if she then revealed what the situation was, but she keeps it a mystery for hundreds of pages and only reveals it once I'd forgotten about the whole thing and can't remember what the characters thought. Just give me the plot Mariana, stop gatekeeping it.

Also once MZ decides she likes a phrase, get ready for hearing it 20 times on every page. Big girl socks, poop and "the german" were probably the most common ones in this book. CRINGE.

The way Sal felt self-conscious about her body made me very uncomfortable. While I understand why it was the case, I believe this theme was over-done in this book and wasn't concluded properly. I mean, we all knew Kulti thought she was hot and was attracted to her, but Sal never really accepted that and remained insecure. I understand that's maybe more realistic, but a romance book should, in my opinion, make people feel good. Making the FMC overcome insecurities is a good way of helping readers feel like their own insecurities might be unwarranted. Sadly, we didn't get that from this book.

Love my man Kulti taking no shit from anyone, and teaching Sal to do the same. "The King" indeed.

Respectfully, this is my last attempt at MZ's books. Simply can't handle a 150-page intro again. Goodbye

Slowest of slow burns ever. It was really focused on Sal's journey as a professional female athlete and her struggles and challenges, which was great to read about.  Not exactly a romance book.
