2.5 I just wish there was more of a theme amongst the quotes and the biographies were longer. But overall a good short read with beautiful artwork.

Excellent artwork, with some good quotes and some quotes that maybe didn't age quite so well.

Really just quotes with an art piece matched for every one... I was expecting a more graphic novel format??

Really appreciated how short and sweet the book was. The portraits/art work were great. I feel like some of the quotes could’ve had more context or had more framing with the little blurbs they were paired with.

Impressively strong despite (or perhaps because of) it's brevity. The illustrations are eye-catchingly spare with pops of color that highlight the quotes. The brief bios were fascinating but I wanted more (at least a little more). The tiny amount of text does make for a more visually appealing layout, but it just felt too short. Beautiful work though. Perfect for coffee table browsing or gifting.

Beautiful illustrations and spirited quotes. I would have given it a whole-hearted 4 stars if it included more bio on each person. 3.5

Set up as a quick summary of the person and then the quote they gave with beautiful visuals, the book provides a wide variety of perspectives on black history and has me wanting more. Very simple but at the same time profound, the author chose quotes that might not always have been focused on black history in the moment but can be interpreted to explore a lot about their lives and those black lives around them.
