Was extremely straightforward, but still suspenseful! The ending is left fairly vague and open, and makes you question everything youve learned previously. Will definitely have to read again to pay attention to the smaller details!

A fun, dark popcorn-style mystery that I read through in a day. Reads like a fun YouTube video essay and creepypasta rolled into one. The pace is snappy and it's a fairly light read, even though the subject matter is very dark. The plot is outlandish, but watching the puzzle pieces fall into place is very enjoyable.

this spooked me, I jumped when they started theorizing the backstory! I thought that would be the most unbelievable part of the story but unfortunately it got really convoluted and the ending is unsatisfying.

the floor plans are more fun to figure out than the photos in Strange Pictures bc they’re more fair IMO. but any other reason behind these weird rooms would’ve made for a better story.

I absolutely loved Uketsu’s Strange Pictures and perhaps my mistake was to read that one first because this book, Strange Houses, feels not as well-constructed as the other one.

If you’re familiar with the very popular Strange Pictures, a comparison with this one is inevitable. The main concept remains the same: using house floor plans instead of drawings to narrate an eerie and convoluted story about some mystery that gets resolved in the end. However, the way the pieces of the puzzle connect in this book is oftentimes too far fetched to make it believable.

We go from “This enpty space in the house feels odd” to “This is a murder house” in zero time, depriving the reader (in this case me. Hi, I’m reader) of details that could help them understand or find their own conclusions like it happens in the other book.

At some point in the story, towards the end to be precise, a series of random characters get introduced in very few words to simply justify the convoluted and confusing story behind the strange houses. I literally lost track of who was who at some point and all I know is that there’s an open ending that doesn’t leave me satisfied.

Still a cute quick read, but read it before starting Strange Pictures. Please, don’t make the same mistake I did!
