This was such a sweet romance! Starting off with a Vegas wedding between two strangers certainly caught my attention.

Grace’s journey of self-discovery in her 20s is relatable and realistic. Like so many of us, she is lost after spending years chasing her degree. Through letting go, she finds herself and her family, both blood and found. This is truly a beautiful story.

This was one of those books I had high expectations for based on the hype, and overall I was disappointed. The messages and themes were relevant and interesting, but the way they were executed through the characters fell flat. The characters were believably flawed, but their behaviour and the way they talked wasn't believable. Some of the writing is beautiful, but the prose doesn't slot into a believable narrative.

Honey Girl has a brilliant opening: Grace wakes up in Las Vegas with memories of getting drunk married the night before. The book goes back and forth with scenes from Grace's past and present to explain how she marries a stranger. Eventually, Grace tracks down her wife, Yuki, and together they see if the spark they have is real love or a one-night adventure. Throughout, Grace's struggles with self-esteem, career path, and biological family shed light on her impulsive decision to marry a stranger. The story highlights the point in many young adults' lives when they finish school, prepare to pursue their dream career, and realize that it may not be what they want. The book is also an honest exploration of depression and anxiety and how mental illness impacts self-esteem, relationships, and productivity. Although it pages a bit in the middle, Honey Girl is a worthwhile read, illuminating the power of found family and illustrating how people who appear to have everything under control sometimes don't.

very gay, very cute, and very sad at a lot of parts, I really enjoyed getting to see so much of myself in a book :)
