I think that people see Las Vegas marriage and immediately assume that this is a romance, which is definitely the wrong frame of mind to read this book from. The romance is swoon-worthy and some of the lines are tooth-achingly sweet, but it really isn’t what the book is about.

Grace is an excellent character, and her experience as a disillusioned post-grad is relatable. Rogers has a lot to say about academia, mental health, society’s treatment of black women, and parental expectations. Great read for sure. The characters are great, I love how queer and diverse even the background characters are.

My big critique of this book is awkward dialogue. The exposition in the first chapter is clumsy (people never call each other by their full names in Every Single Sentence). However, because this is Rogers’ first book and she’s so young, I think this will definitely improve by her next book. I can’t wait for her next one!!
