It was really well written. Her characters were all kind of terrible people but they were all set up for a life of hardship that caused them to constantly want to do the right thing but in turn do the exact opposite.

3.75. I started this one earlier this year, & almost gave up on it twice. I just didn't care that much about the characters (and there's not much plot to speak of). It's definitely not my favorite Louise Erdrich novel, but I'm glad I continued. The author has a gift for painting absurd situations, & I loved the ending.

Louise Erdrich is probably my favorite writer. The Beet Queen has touches of the humor and incredible character work I love so much in LaRose and The Round House, but lacks those later novels' touch-your-soul profoundness. Also, the story doesn't come together for me.

Not as powerful as Love Medicine, but still a wonderfully written and compelling story.
