This book is a bit of a departure from Erdrich's typical content in that its Indigenous characters aren't the main focus, but her writing is just as good as it always is. As the name implies, the book is about its female characters. There are a few men who pop up now and then, but they appear in supporting roles. Mary, Sita, Celestine, and Dot are the stars, and they are all complex and flawed characters who are inherently interesting.

I read Erdrich's books in the wrong order; this one first. I adore her books in this series, although this is still my least favorite of them... I think perhaps I identified some characters as people in my life and got annoyed with them. Highly recommend the author but leaving the rating.

Classic Erdrich. Why hasn't Wes Anderson made this into a movie?

Goodness, what a book. I was lost in these characters' stories and couldn't put it down. Her writing is gorgeous and I plan on reading more of her work.
