Sera Swan was once one of the most powerful witches in Britain, until she resurrected her great-aunt Jasmine (and accidentally resurrected a long-deceased rooster) which drained her of all her magic and she was exiled from the Guild of Magic. 15 years later, Sera spends her days helping out at Batty Hole Inn, her aunt’s BnB, where she lives with her resurrected aunt, an overly opinionated witch trapped in the body of a fox, her 11 y/o cousin with budding magical powers, Matilda who is aspiring to become a hobbit, 20-something Nicholas who wakts to be a knight, and a reanimated skeleton chicken. When Luke Larsen arrives with his young sister Sera opens her mind for the first time to the possibility of regaining her magic and maybe more....

This is a cosy, magical, low stakes romance. Its somewhat predictable (as they all are) but it has a lot of heart and soul. The characters of the inn are a mixture of life's outcasts who have all found a chosen family. This is the definition of a cosy read, perfect for a rainy weekend.

Enh. There were a lot about this book that was charming, but also a lot of things that didn't hang together or that just sort of bothered me. The cast of characters is highly entertaining, and I love the semi-sentient house and its quirks. Unfortunately in a lot of ways it sort of feels like much of the book is a bunch of quirks in a trenchcoat. The central romance never quite hit for me -- I could see them caring for each other, yes, and finding companionship, but then when they're suddenly struck by overpowering lust, that part felt like it came out of nowhere. The entire
overthrow the evil sorcerer who's the head of the Magical Guild
plotline felt... unnecessary? I mean, I get the themes that the author was invoking and why, but in this book, they felt so oddly juxtaposed to the softer story. There are a lot of books that take on that idea in a more satisfying way. And then the heroine's story... the big reveal felt entirely predictable to me, and then I was completely annoyed about
her losing her magic again
at the end. It's a trope that just bothers me so much.

Loved the writing style, loved the first book, and love the cozy magical world, but the premise and characters didn’t grab me here, and though it was well-foreshadowed, I didn’t love the resolution.
