This is a Harry Bosch who is living within his NEW reality. He's not a cop, cannot wear a gun, and is a private investigator...which is viewed with distain by practically EVERYONE.
Eleanor (his ex-wife) is in his life, sort of. They obviously love each other, but they don't always LIKE each other. They are trying to live apart/near...but both situations bring their own challenges.
Maddie has been a HUGE change in everyone's life...that she touches. It will be interesting to see how this progresses (within the book series). It is definitely different that what happened in the TV show (and I am 100% fine with it).
Gracilia has been in a couple of the books, but as a side character to a side character. Now, in this story, she's just a side character...that allows the investigation to exist. Thank you very much.
Terry is in this story, but not the way you would think, especially after the last book. I was impressed/saddened by how things worked out, but it was SO well done.
Buddy is frustrating and adorable at the same time. Just saying. If I had to be around him, I know that he'd hit on my very last nerve, but you know he's got the best of intentions (honestly).
Rachel is a good ying to Bosch's yang. Love how she's introduced, but also love how she inserts herself into what NEEDS to get done.
We all know how the FBI versus LAPD usually works out. Nothing really changes on that front, but how the FBI deals with P.I.s is even worse (yeah, never knew it could be THAT bad).
The bad guy's a really bad guy, but how he became The Poet, and who he is hurting and setting up revenge on ... is very disturbing.
Loved the way the investigation revealed itself. I also love how the characters within the story don't always "get it right", but more often than not...go down blind alleys and dead ends. Brings such a reality to the story.
Is this a love story, or just a convenience of lust. Hmmm?
The heartache between Eleanor and Harry is palpable. To be similar, but also SO different. Both driven people...at different points in their lives...but they will always have a common denominator.
The love of Harry for Maddie is great to see. I understand it, but not having been in his current situation...I don't know how I'd handle it. Probably worse than Harry does, to be honest.
The climax, and how the story ended was great. Edge of your seat type writing. One that you know you HAVE to finish, for you NEED the answers, but also that you want to start another Harry Bosch book, soon. The Closer is on the docket, next.

As good and entertaining as any Michael Connelly book, if not particularly substantive.
This is the first of the Harry Bosch novels I've read/listened to. It was pretty good, but there were some details thrown in that we're distracting. The tone is very much like Garrison Keillor's Guy Noir jokiness, except it's not supposed to be funny. Generally though, it was a good mystery. Nice beach read.
In this follow up to The Poet, Harry is asked to look into the suspicious death of a friend which leads him to the FBI’s new case following their internal black eye. Robert Backus was a serial killer who happened to be an FBI agent charged with catching serial killers. Now he is back to finish what he started and we are all dragged along for the entertaining ride.

Love Bosch. Started after watching series on TV. Books don’t disappoint. However, I don’t need him to have a love interest.

Really enjoyed the plot, however the move to first person was pretty jarring in the previous book, and now Connelly's decision to keep Bosch's POV first person and move to third person for other characters really gave me pause at the beginning of each chapter. Really glad that The Closers does away with any first person POV.
A terrifically enjoyable Bosch thriller, that deftly weaves together different characters from the author’s novels - and the usual evidence of a genuine social conscience, and evocation of the city.
