Would give 3.5 but like the concept of using anxiety as information to direct our behavior - we have more control than we realize over our emotions and can practice working on our anxious responses

I couldn't really decide how to rate this book. As a person with Generalized Anxiety Disorder I hated it. I felt like it was often times the equivalent of telling a depressed person to just think happy thoughts and they would be better. But the book claims that its not trying to fix clinical anxiety but more everyday anxiety and it did have lots of suggestions and coping strategies that are generally helpful for being a more productive and healthy human being (mostly stop drinking, get sleep, eat healthy, exercise and meditate) but overall to me it just felt like all the advice came from a place of privilege (like go get a massage, just take a vacation, try every work out class you can until you find the one you like- not everyone has the time or money for that- but her solution for worry about money?- just tell yourself that money isn't scarce but abundant!, its just that easy and all your money worries will go away!). Despite all of my annoyance with this book and I still felt myself at time being like so and so should really read this as I feel it will help them realize that some of their behaviors and coping mechanisms aren't helping them.

So yea, I both hated this book for myself, but may recommend it to others?

This is another book that I enjoyed as an audio book in 2023 -- so, lack detailed notes. In fact, I thoroughly enjoyed being able to listen to the scientific background without being tempted to look up studies or go off into rabbit holes since I was driving while listening.

Dr Suzuki's overall message is a positive one - we can trick our brains into do what we want. The brain will believe what you tell it - but you also have to listen to your brain. When you are feeling anxiety - figure out what that means for you. It doesn't have to paralyze you -- take steps to feel in control, productive and live your life. That anxiety doesn't have to stop you. She throws in some analysis of "Flow" for good measure.

I very much enjoyed reading the parts of this book about recent research on anxiety and the brain. It was quite interesting and insightful!
This book was a good balance between science and scientific language and real life application. I enjoyed how the writer made all these parts make sense in a non-judgmental, be-kind-to-yourself kind of way. She shared her personal stories, thus building rapport with the reader. You really feel like you get to know her as a human being and not just some scientist throwing information at you, which was definitely refreshing to read in this book.
There were also some assessments and real life application suggestions I also appreciated and enjoyed reading about.
I would definitely recommend this for anyone who lives with anxiety!
