“Whereas scholars used to talk about the success or failure of movements, today they are more likely to talk about movement ‘outcomes,’ in recognition of the unintended consequences.” (Part IX: What Changes Do Movements Bring About?)

We need to completely change the way we view movements. While evaluating the shortcomings of both Occupy and BLM helps activists develop new strategies – solely focusing on the failures inevitably leads to burnout. Since those movements, discussions on class consciousness and institutional racism have entered the mainstream – with articles on BLM featured in everything from Good House Keeping to Marie Claire. This normalization of previously untouchable topics is crucial to long-term structural change.

A great collection of papers and book excerpts. The book doesn’t simply list a timeline of social movements – but instead asks the thought provoking questions “who joins SMM? Why do SMM occur? Who remains and who drops out?” Etc. Etc. Etc. The answers are not as cut-and-dried as one might think. Overall, an enjoyable text for assigned reading.
