“I feel ugly, like I’m a bad person, and yet I’d like to be loved.
Reading this book, I felt seen in so many different ways. No one captures the beauty and darkness of girlhood like Ferrante. This might be my favorite of hers.

I wasn’t interested enough in the main character’s story or hardly at all. I also immediately lost interest when sex was introduced as a topic since some 21 year old man wanted to be sexual with the mc and she allowed it in a weird way that didn’t add to the plot and just made me care even less about the story. The plot didn’t move at all and typically I enjoy plotless leaning books so I can tell this just really wasn’t for me.

i wanted to like this so bad. i wanted this book to become a necessity for my life as i know it. when i read the opening line, "[t]wo years before leaving home my father said to my mother that I was very ugly" i texted everyone i knew a picture of the page with the caption "holy fuck"

the writing is gorgeous. i mourn the writing lost in translation if the writing that was kept is this good. unfortunately, this book drags on for an eternity; spanning the course of two years and a miriad of issues only rich people deal with. however i will in fact be reading the rest of ferrante's work.

This is unfortunately my first Elena Ferrante novel, and I am not super impressed.

I enjoyed the contrast of rich and poor, especially when considering the difference in problems they had. I found each of the characters brutally honest, to a point where they felt too dramatic and flat. I guess a major point of the book was that people are the way they are and that life is not what adults make it seem like to kids, but still I felt this was much too miserable from every character’s perspective. Maybe I am too optimistic.

The writing was beautiful and I will definitely be giving Elena Ferrante another go!
