I really like these books but I enjoyed this mystery less than the first two. But love Stoker and Veronica’s relationship progressing!

Definitely one of my favorites of the series so far! I really liked the mystery in this one and it kept me guessing and revising my theories the whole time. The relationship development between Veronica and Stoker is superb and we are so close to them getting together in some form!!! I can feel it!!!

My favorite in the series yet! The mystery here felt more cohesive and I actually cared about it 😆 I'm usually 10x more invested in Veronica and Stoker's relationship than I am in the plot (I mean, that's still kind of true, but hey). The clues tied together well, the reveal made sense, and the Egyptology background was fun. I hope we see Figgy again in the future, because for some reason, I grew to really like that explosive teenager.

Also: the angst. Oh my god, the angst!!! In my journal entries for A Perilous Undertaking, I noted that Veronica's physical attraction to Stoker was obvious, but it seemed like she hadn't fully realized the depth of their emotional connection yet (which was fine, because I'm all for the slow burn!). This book gave me everything I wanted. When I realized we would be meeting a certain character...the potential for drama shot up to the sky, and I wasn't disappointed. I adore how Veronica was potrayed here as she struggled with her feelings: jealous, protective, yet never overbearing as she tries to keep a cool facade. Most of all, I love that her attitude is fueled more by how much she values Stoker as a person than by any potential romance. How I wish we could read from Stoker's point of view!

I'm pleasantly surprised that the subplot concerning Veronica's family hasn't been tossed to the wayside. I didn't expect it to be brought up much after the first book, but it actually feels like it'll come to a head at some point. Let me end with my favorite quote:
“You fight harder for me than you would ever do for yourself. Why?”
“Because there is no power on earth that could make me abandon our friendship. There is no deed you could confess so dark that it would make me forsake you. You said of us once that we were quicksilver and the rest of the world mud. We are alike, shaped by Nature in the same mold, and whatever that signifies, it means that to spurn each other would be to spit in the face of whatever deity has seen fit to bring us together. We are the same, and to leave you would be to leave myself. Make of that what you will.”
