Mark Twain used humor to deliver his anti-slavery position. His portrayal of racism was probably accurate for its time but heartbreaking to read. Jim and Huck’s friendship and respectful camaraderie grew as their story progressed. While Huck mentions the late evening conversations they had on the raft, I think, it would have been a better story if MarkTwain had elaborated more clearly.

The “duke” and “king” storyline was annoying at best and dragged on. 
Tom Sawyer’s reappearance and his stupid prison break antics at the end of the novel reduced the value of the story. 

I only read Huck Finn so that I will have its perspective to read “James” by Percival Everett.

To long. Every time Jim would speak I felt like I was having a stroke. Just did not care about any of the characters. Didn’t like it in high school, I guess I can’t get through it now either.

You don’t know about me without you have read a book by the name of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; but that ain’t no matter. That book was made by Mr. Mark Twain, and he told the truth, mainly. There was things which he stretched, but mainly he told the truth. That is nothing. I never seen anybody but lied one time or another, without it was Aunt Polly, or the widow, or maybe Mary. Aunt Polly – Tom’s Aunt Polly , she is – and Mary, and the Widow Douglas is all told about in that book, which is mostly a true book, with some stretchers, as I said before.

A história começa com Huck a recordar-se d’ As Aventuras de Tom Sawyer e a explicar-nos o que aconteceu desde essa altura.

The Widow Douglas, she took me for her son, and allowed she would sivilize me; but it was rough living in the house all the time.

Huck não gosta de viver em casa da viúva, mas Tom Sawyer convence-o a ficar e a fazer parte do bando.
Algumas semanas mais tarde quem regressa é Pap que sequestra Huck e o mantém prisioneiro na esperança de ficar com o dinheiro da recompensa pela captura de Injun Joe. Pap é bêbado, violento e analfabeto, e por causa das tareias que leva Huck decide fingir a sua morte, e foge numa canoa rio abaixo. O primeiro lugar onde atraca é na ilha Jackson, onde encontra Jim, o escravo fugido da Miss Watson.
A partir daqui os dois iniciam uma série de aventuras, algumas rocambolescas, outras divertidíssimas, outras de arrepiar.

Agora que cheguei ao fim parece-me que este livro é mais sobre Jim do que Huck.
Jim é uma personagem complicada, tanto tem momentos em que é um tolinho como noutros chega a ser trágico. Ele sonha com a sua liberdade e também a da família, quer chegar a um estado do norte, mas também tem a humanidade de salvar um rapaz branco e ferido levando-o para um lugar seguro e colocando em risco a sua liberdade.
Também Huck no momento em que Jim é preso, e pode ser devolvido ao seu legítimo proprietário, decide ir contra as regras pelas quais foi criado e toma medidas para assegurar a liberdade de Jim

I took it up, and held it in my hand. I was a trembling, because I'd got to decide, forever, betwixt two things, and I knowed it. I studied a minute, sort of holding my breath, and then says to myself: 'All right, then, I'll go to hell'—and tore it up.

Em pleno século XXI é uma subtil declaração a favor da igualdade e contra o racismo, mas em 1884 deve ter feito um grande estrondo.
