This one didn't grab me...I had a hard time getting through it. Maybe if I'd read the series from the start then I'd appreciate the characters more, but probably a one and done.

Eleven books into the series & I’m still enjoying Will Thomas’ Barker & Llewelyn novels. It’s 1892, Cyrus Barker has made Thomas Llewelyn a partner in the Inquiry Agency Barker opened more than 10 years ago. Thomas has been married to his wife for 6 months when the novel begins. The Prime Minister contacts them about being couriers to a satchel that a spy from the Home Office stole from Eastern Europe & was killed at Charing Cross. The British government wants to return it to its original owners & away from German hands.

I do love this series & am seeing a lot of growth in Thomas Llewelyn. You see the return of many familiar characters in this story. The story pace was perfect, but almost too fast.

Audiobook review. Narrator: Antony Ferguson

Another interesting case for Barker and Llewelyn, and great job by Antony Ferguson on the character voices. My only 'ding' for this series is Llewelyn and his wife. It would be nice to just have a detective series without any sex or love interest, but at least he's not as bad in this book as he's been in some of the others. I always enjoy the historical aspects of their cases and learn something new with every book.

It was exckting but not my favorite Barker and Llewellyn adventure. More a 3.5 than a 4 star.

I loved this thrill ride, it's the first book in a long time that kept me up at night wanting to see what would happen next. The story read like a cross between Dan Brown, Arthur Conan Doyle and Clive Cussler. The two main characters were entirely relatable, witty and engaging. The writing was so well done, the layers upon layers of detail in each scene made it easy to put yourself right in the room with the characters without being overwhelming. Just when I thought I had it figured out there would be a new twist to make me question it all over again. I had not read any of the series prior but this book read well as a stand alone; in fact it has convinced me to dig back and read the prior novels in the series.

Note: I received an ARC of this book from St Martin's Press via Netgalley for an honest review.

The first Barker & Llewelyn that I did not enjoy - the plot is OK, and the looming clouds of WWI and German nationalism add a frisson of realness to what is otherwise a fantasy mystery series, but I find the Rebecca/marriage plot so GD BORING, especially as, to me, Rebecca reads like an insufferable prig. I can't stand that character and I found the novel sort of dragging its feet whenever she appears. Let's hope we step away from the marital home and into the Whitehall offices much, much more in subsequent books. A recommend, but with a definite shrug.

I received an ebook from the publishers and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
