what book! Who could portray the foolishness of men of faith better than this? In their pure soul, they have a brain full of void.
Filthy parasites. Look at Adam who believes his father was a thief, yet spends his inherited money shamelessly. Aaron by any measure is a retard, inherited his "purity" from his daddy. I bet if he lived long enough, he would waste his whore mum's money in the very same way his daddy did. That's how men of faith live.
Nothing was more pleasing to see Aaron and Adam's meaningless lives was ended while Cal went on with a girl he loved and all that money.

well i found a new favorite book!!! these characters felt so real and deeply human to me i can't stop sobbing i never wanted this to end. john steinbeck i love you, you can write like no other but why do you have to put your characters (and me consequently) through so much pain?? also the whole discussion/retelling around Cain et Abel was just fascinating to me as someone who has complicated relationships with my siblings.. just wow. this fucking book!

I usually don’t like generational stories, nor did I really like it the first time around. After being convinced to give it another go I change my mind and was more than positively surprised. The story telling is exceptional and the characters wonderful. The description of guilt, hate, friendship and love is out of this world

I have tried to read this book twice, this is the first time I got all the way through. I had seen the movie and I knew it couldn't be as good as The Grapes of Wrath. It wasn't as good, Grapes was about the very essence of humanity and this is a moving and engaging story but I didn't feel the same connection.
As for the movie, it is almost a different story. Lee is written out and Kate reduced, the events of the movie take place when the book is about three quarters finished.
I enjoyed the book, but I wouldn't say it changed my life like Grapes.
