My bad review stems from the fact that the book didn’t give me what I wanted. I can’t say how good it is as auto biographies go… I found it full of boring passages, written in a style which made me unable to relate to anyone or understand what the author wanted to say (for that I think one would need to have read every single book from the hundreds Lewis is referencing).

This is a somewhat autobiographical look back at his childhood and young adulthood and conversion. It was really interesting to hear about his spiritual journey from his own words. I appreciated his retrospective lens on his thoughts and actions. His conversion was a lot more fascinating as he lined out his long journey than its ever been presented to me before. Highly recommend for fans of his in general.
This reminded me how much I love C.S. Lewis. I recently read through the entire Narnia series with Ellie, but it had been years since I read any of his nonfiction.
Sometimes he lost me, especially in the middle sections with what I assume were early-20th century British pop-culture references as well as discussions of ancient classical texts I know just enough about to recognize my ignorance.
He is one of the most intellectually honest writers I have encountered, not that I consider myself to be all that well-read. But it is very striking and such a breath of fresh air. I feel so privileged to have been allowed to visit the inner life of this great thinker and resonate with his process.
