This was a very slow paced book for me but it was worth it. It took me a while to get into the language and the way it’s written. After I did though, I felt intrigued and wanted to know where exactly the plot was going.

Zooey is very sarcastic and at times very mean and I hated him but then at other times super funny and charming and I loved him. He’s a great complex and deeply in-depth character!

I found it extremely heartwarming and the ending honestly made me emotional and feel sentimental.

The relationship between Franny and Zooey is so comforting and precious.  It felt like a hug.

This is a pinnacle of “dead white guy writing,” but I would be lying if I didn’t admit it was also one of the most important books to me as an adolescent. It shouldn't be the sum-total of a reading life, but for the right reader it could be a launching point for a love of a certain kind of book where the character’s interior world and struggle to understand themselves is the center.

i wish this was written as a full blown novel and not just two different new yorker publishings.
apparently this is supposed to be a zen tale where franny is ignorant in the beginning and in the end gains enlightenment, but themes just did not come through. i was SEARCHING for meaning and i think themes could have been more powerful and pronounced if it were a full blown/one-piece story.

i totally get how smart people can have a lot to say about this but personally i found it excruciating to get through ESPECIALLY zooey with his dialogue it’s like trying to end a bad conversation (i get that’s kinda the point but ugh). i could be convinced to understand and digest the religious themes but i would need a lot more than just the experience of reading the book 🫤 i really wanted to like it and thoroughly enjoyed franny.

The novel is particularly dense, but not in a horrible way. Salinger both made a book of its time but also so far ahead of itself. I genuinely enjoyed reading about Franny and Zooey and their intertwining lives and their struggles to find their spot in the world.
It was delightful.
