These are pitiless stories, brutal and intense slices of life in a racist rural society which are very uncomfortable to read. The dialogue, which is written in clumsy dialect, distracts from the terse, realistic narrative.

Though published in 1938, these vivid stories about the tribulations of black Americans speak directly to the issue of what it means to be human within a given community. Wish I had read these sooner!

I've reread this book so many times. It's so terrible, but it's life. And it's so ugly. Everyone should read Wright's work. It's so illuminating. Not a light read. Go into this book with good mental health. It's graphic and not for the faint of heart.

Amazing! How could I have not read any Richard Wright stories before? He is now one of my favorite short story authors. These stories were each powerful and evocative. I am writing a paper and the imagery with water in each story is very interesting and will provide me with many pages.

Stunning; some of the best literature has to offer. Books such as this one put into question the entire endeavor of American literature, forcefully overshadowing the many celebrated works dealing with the various minor white man struggles. Unforgettable stories and images.
