Breathtaking. This collection of short stories is brutal and shocking; it hypnotizes the reader and doesn’t let them go. I am sitting here with my mouth open after finishing. This is one of the best pieces of literature that I have ever read.

devastatingly beautiful. this book captures the lose lose reality of Blacks in the jim crow south. this book will break your heart but give you hope in how everyday people sacrificed themselves so others can live (even when undeserving).

I always liked his writing style. I like the short stories...they allow the author to mix stories of utter despair with those of triumph and bittersweetness. However the rape story bothered me, even as a product of its time. It's just gross that even the story itself condemned and slut shamed a woman because she was assaulted against her will.

Important and hard book to read - especially considering when this was written.

An incredibly bleak look at the lack of choices black Americans faced in the Jim Crow South. A must-read from Richard Wright.

Like most of Wright's books (at least the one's I've read) there is a lot of anger. It really draws you in.
