Persephone Fraser made the biggest mistake of her life twelve years ago. She no longer spends summers at a cottage in Barry’s Bay, now working as a magazine editor in Toronto. However, when she receives a phone call that her former neighbour passed away, she rushes back to her summer home and back to her former best friend, Sam Florek. Percy and Sam were inseparable for six summers in their teenage years, working together in his family’s restaurant and swimming in the lake. But then something happened to make them not speak for twelve years. Now, Percy has to confront her past and try to fix her big mistake.

This story really tugged at my heartstrings. It was an extremely slow burn romance. I kept wishing Sam and Percy would get together sooner because their chemistry was so strong. The big revelations at the end were heartbreaking. My only critique is that the ending seemed quite short. I would have liked to see more of a happily every after for Percy and Sam because their romance was short lived on the pages.

Every Summer After is the perfect summer romance!

Thank you Tandem Collective and Penguin Random House Canada for sending me a copy of this book!

Wow, I couldn't have hated this more. 1) it's a complete copy/paste of Love & Other Words which I didn't like either... 2) almost the entire story revolves around infidelity which is irritating af... 3) not a single person in it is likable or redeemable...

Needless to say, I do not recommend this book.

“I did want you. I do want you. I’ve always wanted you.”

I adore a childhood friends-to-lovers / second chance romance, so there was no question that I was going to love Every Summer After. It also made me feel nostalgic, so this was a win-win-win for me!

It’s hard not to fall in love with Sam & Percy from the get-go. My favorite thing about Percy was her love of horror movies and her desire to become a writer, and my favorite thing about Sam was how sweet and supportive he always was.

There’s definitely some not so great things here - like miscommunication and cheating, which aren’t my favorite. But, I was sold for 90% of this book. I smiled and giggled and felt butterflies in those young, innocent moments between Sam & Percy.

I think the tough part for me is having read Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren 4 years ago and really enjoying that one. It was one of the first romances I’ve read, and I still love those characters to this day. So, I did kind of feel like I was reading another version of the same story.

That aside, I did love this book. I think I’m going to rate it 4.5 stars. That feels true to my feelings. It’s also the same rating I gave Love and Other Words… so I’m gonna do the one thing everyone says not to do. I’m reading this books back to back. I’m gonna re-read one of my favorite romances. Let’s do the thing. 😏

I was genuinely not expecting to love this book as much as I did. Nick Earls' After Summer has always been a book that reminds me of my summers in Cape May - immediately taking me back to my time there...the smells and sounds. Fortune's book did the same for me- immediately I felt transported back to cool sand and the sounds of the water lapping against the shoreline. While Every Summer After takes place on a lake - the feelings were the same.

I enjoyed the back and forth between the present and the past - seeing Sam and Percy's story through the years; and how, even though they both attempted to put the other in the past...their connection was too much to ignore. The infidelity didn't strike me as it has other readers - they were teenagers, both trying to figure out a serious relationship while still being kids on the brink of huge changes. While it broke their relationship at the time - it was a mistake and a learning opportunity for them both. Neither was perfect, neither handled anything the best way...but what more can you expect from 17 year olds? We all sucked at 17.

The way they found their way back to each other, and the ending felt natural and believable. I thought it was the perfect way to wrap up a romance- it didn't erase the messy parts of two people coming together and re-learning each other. It didn't wrap everything up in a neat bow - it felt like you were reading a true story about two people. Which, quite honestly, is my favorite type of story- the believable ones.
