Bet You

Ah, the classic, "i bet you can't get them" trope. Predictable? Yes. Did I love every minute? YES. I loved their banter so much, and loved the sailing and cosplay love.

One science nerd Spencer confronts the big man on campus, Cory, after he finds his Jeep parked in his spot, they run into each other everywhere. Spencer is irritated by Cory but Cory pursues him anyways because being yelled at was kind of a turn on for him. That initial interaction leads to pranks and silly teasing that leans heavily into flirting, and then turns into some voyeurism/exhibitionism moments. Despite their initial feelings for each other, they start to develop a kind of friendship with some benefits before they realize just what they've gotten into. It was a good quick read.

Not for me. Sorta bored

Fun with good banter but definitely predicted part of the third act conflict. I like Corey and Spencer as characters and they’ve got good chemistry. I think there was a little lack of development on Spencer’s part for me but it was still a good book.

Girl, have the car towed. It’s not that deep.

Cory’s a dick. Spencer’s got issues. Bet You by Neve Wilder is the fourth installment in the Franklin U series and was truly a wild ride. Cory is the cocky, dick slingin’ DIK boy who keeps stealing Spencer’s parking spot. Spencer’s the uptight science nerd who is clearly upset about the parking spot issue, but unwilling to take any action. One day he explodes at Cory, making some great points about their class disparity, but beneath all that anger is something much more exciting: lust. Spencer resists Cory’s advances, but when Cory makes a bet** that he can get Spencer into his bed, he doubles his efforts. As they begin to pay off, Cory can’t help but wonder if he is harboring secret feelings of his own.

A quick, absolutely spoiler-filled list of things I like and disliked:

SpoilerPositives:
-the two men had a mostly nice, playful banter
-despite the issue with the voyeurism in the story, the scene where Cory makes Spencer jerk off in front of his window as repayment was hot

Negatives:
-Spencer outlines why it’s really disrespectful for Cory to use his parking space. It’s actually quite simple, he’s constantly busy with school and work, and after a long shift on his feet he doesn’t want to park a quarter of a mile away from his home. So why does Cory do it again? Spencer’s response prank (filling his open Jeep with bird seed) is a bit much, but honestly. I wouldn’t have cleaned the car. Or more simply, I would have called for towing, security, or the parking enforcement. If the parking lot requires a pass, someone’s bound to be around who makes that a necessity. Spencer, baby, this might be hot but he’s an asshole.
- I feel like the voyeurism was handled a little too lightly lol I felt bad for Spencer, but when he started this Peeping Tom routine I found my sympathy waning
-I desperately needed more theatrics when the big “bet” was revealed. Spencer seemed defeated and forgave Cory. I need tears. I need anger. I need a *scene.*
-Why does every college romance feature on MC struggling to tell their parents they don’t want to follow in their paths lol this has to be at least the third instance in this series so far (they’re all penned by different authors, though, so meh.) It never ends up being a big deal!
-Spencer’s forgiveness for Cory’s actions is cemented by a lip sync performance at a frat party followed by a mutual admission the two guys are in love, and bitch I did not buy it. They shared some kinky mutual masturbation, but little in the way of feelings or vulnerability, so I’m not sure how this all became so serious
-I’m surprised that other characters in the novel find Cory irresistible and not annoying.
-An exchange in the epilogue that absolutely took me out:
”This better not be a Fleshlight,” I tease.
“Pfft. We’re each other’s Fleshlights. Open it.

**I actually like this silly trope when it’s well done, with some angst and actual hurt, a little groveling, but honey, this was not it for me!

Oh I loved this one! Spencer is a science major and definitely not at all interested in Cory, one of the frat bros in the DIK house across the street. Cory is a player, he’s cocky, and he keeps stealing Spencer’s parking spot!
Cory is fascinated by the fact that Spencer doesn’t immediately fall for him. Everyone loves him! Why doesn’t Spencer? When a bet with his frat bros pushes him to spend more time with Spencer, he realizes that he may have gotten himself into a situation he isn’t sure he’s ready for.

This book was really good! Charming characters, great pacing, very funny banter, and a swoon-worthy ending. I really enjoyed it.

Themes you’ll find include:
- Nerd/jock
- voyeurism
- grumpy/sunshine
- “hate” to love (one-sided)

Definitely don’t skip this book if you’re into the FU series!
