Doesn't hit the cult classic level of the first, but a remarkable sequel to a series I adored as a kid and continue to read with a warm smile.

Read-aloud with the kids. Solidly enjoyable, but not nearly as compelling as the first in the series.

I didn't find this one quite as exciting as the first, but the kids have loved it. We've been reading it outloud. It's set up to continue which the kids are excited about.

THE MYSTERIOUS BENEDICT SOCIETY AND THE PERILOUS JOURNEY, manages, miraculously, to be even better than its excellent predecessor (THE MYSTERIOUS BENEDICT SOCIETY). The sequel has the same strengths as the original -- four heroes, two boys and two girls, who are unusual and likable; compelling villains; adventures galore; a nice message or two; and writing with scarcely a false note. The sequel is also a tiny bit less over-the-top than the original. But if you're looking for a realistic read, neither book is for you.
