I really didn't like the first book, so I'm not entirely sure why I got this one from the library.
There's a weirdly condescending tone here - the book is talking to you like you're a particularly slow 12-year-old that needs everything spelled out for you. It feels like the author wants you to laugh AT the main character, not WITH them.
Speaking of Molly, she's less of an Amelie isn't-she-so-QUIRKY character this time around, but the world of the book distorts itself around her so much that some of it's characters' actions just don't make sense midway through when they're needed for plot reasons. Add in some exposition-heavy backstory and you can see where this is going to end up pretty soon after it starts. For all I know, that's meant to be a feature, not a bug.
There's a big reveal at the end here that felt like it was supposed to be surprising but just plays out as "What? Okay, sure, I guess?". Some books have rhythm - fast in some parts, slow in others, varying in tempo to keep you hooked; in this one you can hear the plot's rigid clicktrack ticking along throughout, ensuring you have a Big Development happen right on schedule as you work your way through to the end.
