This book centers around three woman: Essun, Damaya and Syenite. Essun comes home from work to find her youngest child murdered by her husband and her daughter missing. Damaya is a young child who is given away because of her abilities. And Syenite is a woman who has a mentor and is trying to "earn" her rings.

There are so many amazing things about this book! But, I cannot give it more than 4 stars for a couple of reasons. First-I started by reading this book and in a week I had only gotten to page 20-I kept falling asleep! The only reason I stuck with it is because it is the current selection for my book club. So I switched to audiobook and I'm glad I did. Second-I had a very hard time figuring out what was going on. It took awhile to understand what the fulcrum represents, the nodes, etc.. So it was quite awhile before I became invested in any of the characters. Third-I dislike when authors switch between what person the story is being told in. Sometimes it's second person, sometimes it's third. It really messes with the flow for me.

But there were so many good things about this book too!  The oppression felt by the characters seems similar to prejudice and racism in today's world so very relevant to today's standards. And once I understood what in the hell was going on, I started to rather enjoy it. There were several lines that stood out to me too. One in particular: "Home is what you take with you, not what you leave behind."

Really interesting fantasy series -- looking forward to the next book! Loved the worldbuilding and the use of different POVs.

The Good:
- fun magic system
- really excellent use of POV
- compelling narrative

The Bad:
- some language felt stilted - believe it was purposeful, but it's not my jam
