i am unfortunately not entirely sure how to feel about this book -- i liked the world-building and the extension of the world introduced in the daughter of the moon goddess duology (especially with the primary setting being in the mortal kingdoms, rather than the immortal world), but unfortunately for a lot of the book the romance fell short and the pacing was a bit off. while the reveal at around 70% helped things make a lot more sense and caused the relationship to start to grow on me, i still was not wholely invested by the end (though i did like the god of war as a character!). i'm also very glad this subverted the typical hundreds-of-years-old immortal man falling in love with a super young mortal trope because that is literally the worst and we need to eliminate it immediately!
would recommend if you enjoyed daughter of the moon goddess (though you definitely don't have to read it first to understand this!) or are looking for a standalone fantasy!

I enjoyed this adult standalone. It is a fantasy inspired by Chinese mythology and folklore weaving elements of romance, fate and betrayal into a tale.
This book had a great concept and strong elements keeping me engaged throughout. Our main character is put through the ultimate test of deciding between immortality or her mortal life.
While this book was alluring in many aspects, it wasn’t as luscious as I’d hoped. It fell short of my expectations and while engaged in the moment, I don’t think it is a memorable tale for me.

Thank you NetGalley for the eARC!
Unfortunately, I don't think Sue Lynn Tan is for me. While she has pretty individual sentences, something about the way they come together just BORE me. It's slow and frankly I don't believe a lot of the conflict - Liyen is constantly saying how surprised she is that the God of War isn't awful, and yet there isn't a moment where I'd believe he had been. She's frightened for no reason! This is true of... a lot of things in the book.
There was an interesting twist at around 70%, but it was too late, and everything after that moved slowly as well. If you liked her first duology, you'll like this - I had similar issues, so maybe it's just my taste! It's a shame, the covers are so pretty. I hope romantasy lovers get what they want from this - it has an audience, it just isn't me.
