An absolute masterclass in feminism, and what it is to be a fat women in the world. West writes with a truth so raw it burns at times. There is no shying away from what is real. She has found a way to have faith in humanity even after dealing with the worst of it, aka: people on the internet. She is smart and quick and firmly rooted in who she is. Any women would be lucky to be a fraction of the person she is.

Shrill is a re-read for me and it still remains one of my comfort books. Lindy West perfectly merges humor and emotion in such a way to make you feel seen.

I have read a few really impactful books this year, books that changed the way I think and live. This was one. I realized things about myself that were deeply buried, and things about society that aren’t said often enough. West is an engaging and funny writer, but balances rage and poignancy with hilarity. I feel like this is a must read and now I’ll be watching the show.

Worth it for her comments on rape jokes alone.

What an absolute joy to spend 251 pages in Lindy West's mind! I picked up Shrill and Grit at the same time—one a memoir/essay collection, the other a psych/self-help read—and my god, what an interesting combination. While Grit is a laundry list of highly successful people who got to top by beating themselves up with their passion and practice and perseverance, Lindy West is a warm hug of acceptance and self-love. I didn't turn to Lindy to feel better about myself, only for laughs and some insight, but I now felt better about myself and my worth after reading her book than I have after reading any book ever. Her compassion is contagious, and while this is not a perfect collection, it is one that I plan to return to again and again because it encourages women to demand acceptance. Such a unique and refreshing voice—thank you, Lindy!

Some crazy powerful, often hard to read shit. The earlier parts are funnier; the later parts are heavier; all of it is really serious even when it's funny. I think this is an important book, and better, it's a good book, too.
