I will admit that I did this for Miss Victoria Swab, but I don't regret a single thing. I was surprised that this was such a middle-grader book (but I should have expected that when I went to the middle school section of the library), but it was actually very good??? Like the atmosphere, the history, and how cool the Veil sounds, absolutely mind-blowing.

The best part of the novel is the friendship between Jacob and Cass, which I honestly need more of. I would love to see things in Jacob's perspective and his bright personality. Honestly, such an iconic duo. How Cass and Jacob meet and become entangled was an interesting read and I found myself overanalyzing everything  because oomf these kids deserve everything and more.

In my journey to eventually read all of V.E. Schwab's books, this book was absolutely a delight! I loved the way ghosts were re-imagined in this book, and Cass and Jacob's friendship was probably one of my favorite aspects of the book. The fact that Cass's parents are ghost hunters but her dad doesn't believe Cass can see ghosts just adds a fun twist on the whole story.

There's so much you can do with this concept, and I'm excited to see where the series goes next! I checked this out to read in the Halloween season, which we are passed now, but it fit the current weather here, so that's fine with me too. Also, the fact that Schwab can write for any audience is a feat in and of itself and I'm just in awe of her writing skill!

This book came as a surprise to me because I think I expected it to be incredibly mild, since it's middle-grade, but instead it was actually quite intense! Considering the fact that it is geared towards a younger audience, it kind of shocked me that there were such frightening elements throughout.

However, it was kind of perfect for me because I'm easily spooked so I can't read YA or adult horror. This was catered to my weenie butt. It had some "scary" parts for sure, but it wasn't over-the-top for the most part. Mostly, it was just an adventurous story and I really enjoyed that.

Obviously, it is tailored to MG, so I didn't "connect" with the characters (but I didn't expect to). I plan to read the remaining books in the series, but it's not like I'm going to sit here and shout from the rooftops how phenomenal it is. It was good!
