I am rereading the Inspector Lynley series...except I am 100% sure I didn't read this one before. Amazing! and absolutely didn't see the ending coming. Kidnapped illegitimate child of a rising star in Tory government; nasty tabloid publisher dad on the hook but deferring to the mum. She's absolutely obnoxious. Really engrossing, just I'm tired of Deborah's angst over any mention of baby/child as a literary device. LOVED that Havers was really the hero of the book. So think of the stars as 4++.

I've been reading through her series off and on, and have enjoyed the ride, but this one really gripped me. It kept me transfixed and sleep deprived until I finished it. Of course to know the main characters' backgrounds from the other books enhances this one immeasurably, but it certainly can stand alone as a thrilling, compelling story. I particularly enjoyed how it was told in three parts, and that St. James (my favorite character)& Deborah were again back in the mix. Very good storytelling and a fantastic mystery.

this is the first Elizabeth George book I read, and her mastery of story-telling blew me away.

Given my hiatus from Inpector Lynley mysteries, I was worried I wouldn't be able to find the groove again. I struggled, at first, to find the passion for this story. But once I hit part two, I picked up momentum and as the story began to take more shape--I couldn't put it down (despite it being my designated 'bus book'). It was hard for me to not jut go out and get the next in the series straight away.

yep, i'm still reading the havers/lynley/st james mystery series. I had never read this one before. I would have remembered. It starts out as a simple kidnapping and goes on. I had absolutely no idea who the bad guy was till the very end. And then it all made sense. As far as characters go, Eve Bowen was such a cold person. How could anyone be that cold? Maybe even a sociopath, she had no feelings! And no, that doesn't give away anything. Definitely read this, it was one of her best yet.
