This is beautifully written but not my sort of thing. Rather melancholic. Often left me feeling anxious observing the relationship fall apart. Lots of themes about identity and belonging.

A precise, beautiful and sad book about motherhood, nostalgia, homesickness, race and love. Wonderfully written and achingly sad, this will surely be on the Stella Prize shortlist next year.

oh gosh, this book was boring as heck and dragged on to no end. I gave it two stars for the lovely writing and prose. but the story itself was lacking. nothing happened. there were too many descriptions of the weather. of their mundane actions. and perhaps that was the author's intention – for the reader to go as crazy as the main character, charlotte, and understand why she was driven to do what she did (run away from her family). but still, as a book itself, it was not pleasurable or fun to read.

Beautifully written, lyrical language. A little too lyrical in the middle, the pace slowed. I found the ending dissatisfying, not because of Charlotte's choices but for the lack of Henry's perspective.
