I really enjoyed the beginning of this spin off story of Legend of Korra. The show had a lot of political plot lines and even though this one is heavily political, it is also action packed and super fun. I loved seeing all the characters again. I haven't watched the show in quite a while, and this graphic novel made me remember a few characters I had forgotten about and reunite with my old favorites. I wish I had the rest of the series to find out what happens!

These reviews will all have spoilers for Korra since it continues where it left off.

spoilers for the part 1:

I like how this picks up the plot line about forming a democracy. I like how it shows all the issues that can arise with starting one from scratch in an area that's only ever been a monarchy. I like how the main villain wasn't brute force this time and decided to go through the system itself. Shows that the system isn't infallible. People you don't want can become candidates, or the candidates aren't new blood and will only perpetuate the current system you're trying to break free from.

After Guan submitted his paperwork they were trying to think of ways to stop him. The Earth king rightly said they can't just call off the election cause- that's not how democracies work. It'll be backwards to what they're trying to achieve. I appreciated the inclusion of that.

That ending. Woo. Loved it. Already finished the rest of the arc and really enjoyed it. Great read.

Turf Wars ★★★☆☆ (3.5)

This was a fantastic set-up to the Ruins of the Empire story arc. I'm quite impressed with the amount of ground covered in this slim volume. Compared to Turf Wars, this comic does a much better job of clearly showing that Korra and Asami are together, without making their relationship the center of the narrative. I'm happy to see more of Wu, as he's a character I quite enjoy. I'm not a Kuvira fan and I'm finding her narcissism and remorseless attitude extremely annoying, but I'm sure that will be addressed in the upcoming installments. 4.5 stars

TW: reference to past death of a parent, mention of war crimes, imprisonment

Rating for all three parts together: 4 stars
