This feels like a filler book. The stakes are very low, or at least they kind of plateau from the ending of the first book and then things pick right at the end and it feels rushed. But great writing and storytelling none the less.

Whereas The Fifth Season continually shocked me with its twists, this book kept my on the edge of my seat (well, my couch over a rainy weekend) with the suspense of the world-building. The stakes were high, and Jemisin's narrative style made me feel every single one of them. I audibly gasped or screamed multiple times. Thank you for putting this story into the world -- I can't read to read the next one in the trilogy!

I'm not going to waste time gushing specific praise when I could be reading book 3.
