I’m enjoying this series a lot, but this one suffered pretty badly from Middle Book Syndrome. It was a lot slower than book 1 and spent a lot more time talking about doing things, rather than actually doing them. I can see how, if I’d read this upon release, I’d have been left feeling unsatisfied knowing I’d have to wait a year or so for book 3.

That said, I still love Jemisin’s unique style and the journeys our characters are going on, and a lot of plot threads have come together that have me excited to jump into the final instalment.

Amazing, brutal and so different.
Dystopian fantasy with a set of characters so diverse and so unique, each in their own way.
A super well used second person point of view character that finally reveals some of its secrets, who is it that is talking and it's so great I am in love with it.
I know second books get kind of stuck with the middle but this one felt compelling enough so even if I was in the middle of a lockdown and been kind of distracted I've read it in about a week which is what it takes me to read when I work out of the house.
Yes, I'm working. From home, and I don't have the commuting moments to read. And times are stressfull. But once I get into this world, everything else blurrs. And I'm really grateful for that.
